Day 6, 2nd
March
 |
This
is today's trip...
Keith teamed up with Kevin for the
ride over to the east coast to Hobart. It was going to be a long day
with plenty to see along the way.
|
 |
They headed out of
Strahan around 7:30am and stopped in to Queenstown for breakfast a little
way up the road.
|
|
Queenstown
is quite an old town with buildings like this decorating the street.
The weather was a little drizzly but they had prepared for that.
|
 |
Heading out
of Queenstown it's a long winding haul to the top of the mountain and
before they rode into the clouds, Kevin stopped to take this shot looking
back at Keith on his way up.
The photo doesn't do it justice as
it was a sheer drop down.
|
 |
Just
to put some perspective on the above photo, this is the same photo without
the zoom in.
|
 |
Along
the way they turned off the main route to look at a little town called
Tarraleah (nicknamed Stepford). This was a funny little place and
was obviously there to accommodate the workers of the Hydro scheme that
can be seen here.
All the houses looked the same but
all painted different with colourful pastels.
|
|
They had noticed this car going
through Queenstown and it seemed to be there where ever they went.
It seemed the couple were own their own Tasmanian adventure and came from
Western Australia. When Kevin asked him about the roof, he said that
yes he had one and it was in the garage back home, but if you kept up
enough speed you stayed dry... hmmm just like a bike. |
 |
This pub at
Hamilton is where they stopped for lunch and caught up with the couple for
WA.
The interior of this pub is unbelievable,
sails hanging length ways across the ceiling, old photos of the area and
all kinds of memorabilia all over the place.
The WA couple had actually eaten
there before and made an effort to call there once more, so obviously they
enjoyed it. |
 |
Turning off
the road again they went see Lake St.Clair and not pictured but to the
left was the other side of Cradle Mountain, which Kevin had shown days
before. |
|
Getting closer to Hobart and they went
through Richmond and this bridge is a famous convict made bridge dating
back to1823. It's very typical of so much of what has been seen
around Tasmania. It all seemed to be preserved not ripped down to
build new. |
 |
All checked
in and on to the rider's briefing and get something to eat for the boys.
The mountain in the background is Mt
Wellington and you may notice the cloud below it. The mountain
towers over the city of Hobart and Kevin's going up for a look tomorrow.
