Day 5, 1st
March
 |
This
is today's trip...
An announcement came over the entire
ship around 5:30am telling everyone we were about to dock at
Devonport. The night was a reasonably smooth sail to Tasmania with
the odd big swell, but all in all it wasn't much worst than flying through
some turbulence on a plane and the worry Kevin had about being seasick
never happened.
So apart from the chainsaw snorer in
his cabin it was a pretty restful night.
|
 |
It's near 6:30am and
everyone is gearing up for the final customs check and off to Perry Bros
Bakery for the breakfast that has been pre-arranged for the
Safari.
It's a brisk morning, but it's a
bright sunny day ahead.
|
|
Perry
Bros Bakery had it all happening like they were feeding an army.
Bacon, egg and sausage rolls, a variety of juices as well as coffee and
tea. No one started the day on an empty stomach
|
|
Bikes lined both sides of the street
and around 8:00am they started to set off to Strahan. |
 |
A
view of Cradle Mountain and soon Kevin will be at the base and around the
other side on his way to Strahan.
Photos can't quite capture how magnificent
this mountain range looks.
And although there isn't a cloud in
the sky and the sun out in full, it will get down to around 6 degrees this
morning with a wind-chill factor much less than that.
|
 |
On the way to
Strahan there is huge amounts of nothing but wilderness with a road
through it, but awesome to see. |
 |
Just before
you get to Zeehan is Reece Dam, a single road (only one on it at a time)
deep water one side and this drop on the other. |
 |
Steam trains
that are in front of the Pioneers Museum at Zeehan.
|
 |
Arriving at
Strahan, they noticed the airport was all working fine... |
 |
The rooms
were awesome and had a great outlook over the waterfront village. |
 |
One of the
other great services that is provided by BMW Safaris is "Tyres for
Bikes". These guys are great, they have mobile service that
follow the Safari with the BMW Service vehicle offering tyre repairs as
well as new tyres if you happen to wear them out like Kevin did.
So with a full tank of fuel and new
tyres Kevin's bike is all ready for tomorrow's trip to Hobart. |
