Day 10, 6th
March
 |
This
is today's trip...
The day started with the sound of
RAIN... and after breakfast, Trevor the owner of Balmoral on York once
again became the host with the most, by having two buckets of rags, one
with clean and one for dirty, so each could wipe their bikes down as the
rain had all but stopped.
|
 |
Holy
Bridge, Batman! There's a bridge named after you... This is the
famous "Batman Bridge" which allows you to get over the Tamar
River.
This bridge was the first
cable-stayed bridge in Australia and was built in 1966 and finished in
1968.
This bridge was on the way to Beauty
Point home of Seahorse World, a place that farms seahorses and is very
unique and a world first. |
|
This is a research and breeding
facility that provide guided tours through their processes. |
|
These little guys are about two
centimetres long and go from tank to tank until they are around 6 months
old... |
|
and then they are about 10 centimetres
long and a much bigger tank... |
|
And then into breeding tanks such as
these and just in case you didn't know or had forgotten, the male is the
carrier of the babies in his pouch. |
|
These are a fascinating creature to
watch and study the tour was awesome, and it all was thanks to Keith's
daughter that told him he had to go and check it out and report back,
however photos could only be taken in certain areas and flashes were
strictly taboo as they cause cataracts in the eyes of the seahorses.
|
 |
Onward to
Devonport and as they were going to be many hours early, they went to
Mersey Bluff and checked out the lighthouse, which was built on volcanic
rock that dates back more than 185 million years. |
 |
Looking out
from the base of the lighthouse, there's nothing but sea, and if you could
see way out in the distance some 452 kilometres, you'd see Port Phillip. |
 |
At the end of
the break wall leading into the Devonport Harbour looks like a statue of
King Neptune. This water feature was a community project initiated
by the Lions Club of the city of Devonport and was officially opened 1st
March 2009. |
 |
Looking from
the statue, down the harbour of Devonport is where the boarding takes
place on the Spirit of Tasmania, which was still many hours off.
|
 |
And later
that afternoon (4pm) the line up started and they were at the start of the
queue. |
 |
Hours later
and not the first onboard, thanks to some guy that obviously had no idea
what he was doing when it came to loading the ferry, everyone unloaded and
prepared for the voyage back to Port Phillip. |
 |
Pulling out
to sea and another great BMW Safari finished and a wait now for the next
and wonder where it may start and finish. |
 |
And as the
sun goes down and they exit the harbour, Kevin zooms in on the lighthouse
at Mersey Bluff. |
 |
Full ahead
captain. Next stop (10 hours) will be Port Phillip around 6:30am. |
