Welcome
to the 2010 BMW Safari via the
2010 World Superbikes at Phillip Island.
The trip started a a Shell Service
Station at Wallsend, where Kevin met up with Mick, one of his customers
that was getting an early start on the BMW Safari. They travelled
down the road to Kariong and collected a friend of Mick's who was also on
his way to the BMW Safari.
Next stop would be Goulburn for fuel
for both man and machinery. |
 |
7am Shell Service Station
at Wallsend waiting for Mick to show. This year Kevin's riding the
best bike in the world... BMW's R1200GS thanks to Clint for the loan from
Hunter Valley Motorcycle Rentals and apologies to anyone that may have
wanted it over this period.
It's a bike with the lot.
Electronic Suspension, ABS Brakes, Traction Control, Tyre Pressure
Indicators, Panniers and Top Box, and it's also wired with a communication
system so he can listen to music, GPS and even talk on the phone.
It does have an extra comfy seat
from the R1200GSA.

 |
A quick stop at Kariong
to pick up Paul (Mick's mate) and off they go again. Mick's riding the
same as Kevin with even more bells and whistles, while Paul is riding a
R1200CL which definitely is one with the lot! |

Just after the stop a few
Ks before Goulburn, Kevin parted ways with Mick and Paul. They
proceeded down the Hume while Kevin took the Federal Highway and headed
through Canberra.
Along the way, Kevin had been
past this awesome flat green field like he'd done many times before, but
this time he stopped and took few photos.
Way over in the distance, in amongst
the hills, are many, many wind turbines, so many it looks like it would
power all on Canberra. |
 |
One of the many tracks
that go off into the distance... A chap at the lookout asked Kevin if he
wanted to know how to get down there, but he had places to go. He
said it was incredibly flat, but very heavy going like it was mud, but it
wasn't...
So there you go, you're now just a
bit wiser... hahaha
|
| On he went,
one town after another. He came off the Monaro Highway and onto the
Princes Highway at Can River, only to be shadowed by a huge helicopter
with POLICE written along it. Just as he came to the 100 zone, Kevin
heard a weird noise and checked all the gauges, checked the mirrors,
looked both sides and looked right and up... There it was, just above the
trees, a huge helicopter with the backdoor open and a guy looking out the
opening and it seemed he was looking at Kevin.
Hearing all of the warnings about
Victoria (the police state), Kevin didn't do much more than the posted
speed limits from the time he crossed the border. For about 30Ks this
helicopter just followed and then it just disappeared. Later in the
afternoon, he was reading the signs for each of the towns ahead and decide
that he would stop at the next one, and then the next and so on, until he
reach Lakes Entrance, and this is where he decided to call it a night...
Almost 900 Ks in a day is long enough. |
